PDP: A paragon of political menace

By Hibrahim Bala …

The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), the party that ruled Nigeria for sixteen unfruitful years, in my opinion has certainly overstayed their welcome. If the mindless animalistic plunder of Nigeria’s treasury- evidenced by the funds recoveries from its teeming members as well as the corruption allegations proceedings against its members in the courts, during the period the party held sway over the entire nation and its people for which they vowed to rule the country by hook or crook for sixty years doesn’t make them hide their faces in resignation and shame, then the recent letter written to the United Nation(UN) by its national chairman Prince Uche Secondus alleging that the incumbent president Muhammadu Buhari of the APC is destroying Nigeria’s democracy should, the letter is nothing but an attempt meant for subversion of justice, playing to the gallery and above all a scenario where the oppressor pretends to become the victim knowing sooner or later, nemesis would catch-up with them.

In their desperate attempt to stage a comeback, and to score false cheap political goal, they threw caution to the winds and went all too far to the UN to wash their dirty linens in such a reputable international organization, unknowingly the chicken has come home to roast. I don’t envy the PDP, it’s only natural after leaving for a while the scene they bastardized to want to reclaim the power they craved.

In fact, in a knowledgeable, sane and civilized society, people wouldn’t want to be identified with a party like PDP especially with the level of the revelations of the financial havoc they wrecked with the attendant confusion and crises, however, this is Nigeria where thieves are revered, celebrated and even crowned as chiefs by the same people they stole from, even pastors and Imams aren’t left out in this recognition, going about with unearned titles.

A political party is supposed to be a group of people who come together to contest elections and hold power in government in order to promote development and collective interest, based on the foregoing therefore, the current crops of the people in the PDP are to say the least, dangerous politicians never witnessed in any political history for serially raping the nation, their mastery over sharing of the so called ” national” cake is legendary, with individual vested interest as against the supposedly collective interest.

They will forever be remembered as those who introduced do-or-die and Ghana-must -go politics in our nation. Even though the damning looting revelations coupled with evidence especially against the government officials and unofficial of the immediate past administration of the PDP are just a tip of the iceberg, with the fullness of time, when discerning Nigerians get the true state of the magnitude of mindless looting of the treasury, I am quite sure that the same poisonous politicians parading as members of the biggest party in Africa especially in financial recklessness would finally close shop and become history. It’s clear from these reminiscences that only the unwary and unpatriotic Nigerians would ever take the PDP in whatever cosmetics approach serious. Therefore, PDP’s name will be permanently enshrined in the political history of this country as a paragon of political menace.

Lest we forget, their role in either inability or unwillingness to curtail the menace of the Boko Haram terrorist group with a couple of political unrest like tribal clashes which started during their reign, instead of grappling with the challenges, they chose to profit from it and allow it to gain solid grounds as evidenced by the NSA’s office arms monies deal facing trial also in the courts.

While Nigeria and Nigerians burn, when bombs were exploding like fire crackers, fear and confusion became the order of the day, massive looting of the treasury went on publicly with impunity threatening Nigeria’s core existence, and still the people in the PDP continued the ”party”. Suddenly, the day of reckoning came with divine intervention coupled with the resolved of discerning patriotic citizens, lo and behold! The era of fear, impunity and looting ended and a new era of hope, peace and stability was ushered with the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari(PMB) at the 2015 polls, three years plus today, the narrative is clearly different from the nightmare it used to be, security has greatly improved in all ramifications, external reserves stands at $46Billion even with low Oil prices as against $28Billion during one of the periods of highest rise in Oil prices PMB met on ground, the economic outlook is impressive, in that agriculture that was relegated to the background is now at the forefront earning massively and contributing a large chunk of our national GDP with its multiplier effect on employment, international relations are rosy and beneficial especially with the recent invitation of PMB to America by President Donald Trump to discuss and consolidate on bilateral relations to mention a few.

To be fair to PDP, the initial promoters of the party were patriotic statesmen and meant well for the nation and were different from the the disgruntled elements that hijacked the party in the end. The irony is today despite the progress in national development being recorded by PMB, both the initial promoters and the aftermath hijackers of the party have gathered together and ganged up against the charismatic PMB in order to prevent or dissuade him from a constitutional second tenure, deploying every arsenal within their powers.

Perhaps, PMB’s admirable attributes of unmatched stoicism, foresight, and solid performance have become their nightmare, nevertheless, they are aware of all these traits, but still refused to admire and acknowledge, whether or not, PMB the gentleman they loved to hate with passion is the people’s president and the undisputed choice of the progressive and patriotic people, therefore, by the special grace of the Almighty, victory for PMB is as sure as morning follows night come 2019 polls.
