PDP Convention: George, Agbaje may battle for chairmanship

Signals from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, suggest that party faithfuls may be putting finishing touches to who becomes the party’s next national chairman.

All things being equal, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, the governorship candidate of the PDP in Lagos State in the 2015 general elections, has been penned down as a viable candidate for the position.

This is even as indications emerged that a former deputy national chairman of the party, Chief Olabode George may also be interested in occupying the exalted office.

The National Caretaker Committee of the party led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has slated August 17, 2016 for the national convention in Port Harcourt to elect new leaders for the party.

Sources within the party, also revealed that Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, is being tipped as a vice presidential candidate of the party in the 2019 presidential election.

According to the source, the choice of Agbaje has received the blessing of virtually all the geopolitical zones in the country, with the Southeast being the most enthusiastic over the choice of the Lagos politician.

Though the power brokers are not coming out openly to endorse him, a source insisted they are already mapping out strategies to ensure he emerges as the national chairman.

The party’s immediate past Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, is also said to be in reckoning to retain the position, with the backing of the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

The last attempt at election national leaders ended up in worsening the leadership crisis bedeviling the PDP, polarising it along factional lines.
