PDP CRISIS: Gana-led committee wants Sheriff, others expelled

A committee set up by the outlawed Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recommended for the expulsion of the legally recognised national chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

The committee, Strategy Review and Inter-Party Affairs, which was set up by Makarfi, added that all members of PDP working with Sheriff in the National Working Committee (NWC) should also be sacked from the party.

The people the committee said must face expulsion along Sheriff include the deputy national chairman of the party, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; national secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo; national auditor, Alhaji Fatai Adeyanju; national treasurer, Bala Buhari and the acting national publicity secretary, Mr. Bernard Mikko.

The committee, led by Professor Jerry Gana made the recommendation on the submission that Sheriff and all those it recommended for their expulsion have been engaging in anti-party activities.

Gana committee said, “Members viewed with serious concern the activities of the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff group, which centre on anti-party activities.

“Members unanimously suggested that they be expelled from the party through their respective wards.”

Gana and some members of his committee submitted a copy of the report to the former National Security Adviser, Lt.-Gen. Mohammed Gusau (retd.) on Wednesday, when they paid him visit as his Abuja residence.

Gusau, after receiving the document from the committee, bemoaned the crisis rocking PDP leadership and said that an urgent intervention is needed to restore the party.

He then assured he was going to study the report, meet with the two warring groups and advise them appropriately.

It was learnt that plans by Makarfi group are in top gear to ensure the committee report is implemented should it win its appeal at the Supreme Court against Port Harcourt Appeal Court judgement that pronounce Sheriff authentic chairman of the party.

Other recommendations of the Prof Gana-led committee include that “all members of the party, old and new, should make public a written affirmation of their loyalty to the party and its constitution.

“That those being referred to as leaders of the party, like president and the governors, should be stripped of the title of ‘Leader.’”

It explained, “The concept of ‘A Leader’ of the party at any level is alien to the PDP constitution. Accordingly, all claims, pretences, appellations and assumptions to such a title should be stopped and any attempt to introduce it should be discouraged.”
