2019: INEC inaugurates 16-member Election Project Plan Committee

Ahead Saturday November 26 Ondo State governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has listed reasons it has no confidence in the Mahmood Yakubu-led Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct of a free, fair and transparent election.

Among other reasons PDP alleged that the commission played a “suspicious role” in frustrating its candidate in the Ondo State governorship election, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), from campaigning for the election.

That INEC was deliberately working against the interest of the PDP by putting the name of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as its candidate in the first place.

Another reason it gave was that INEC refused to honour PDP’s request for a postponement of the election after the Court of Appeal had affirmed Jegede’s candidacy on Thursday.

And that the electoral officers who allegedly rigged the election in Edo State were being deployed to Ondo to manipulate the polls.

These reasons were disclosed by PDP Spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, during a press conference in Abuja on Friday.

However, INEC has refuted those claims. The commission’s Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, in reaction to the PDP allegations said that the fears expressed by the party were baseless.

According to him, the commission would adhere strictly to all principles expected in a free and fair election. He added that the electoral officers being deployed to Ondo have no bad records.
