PDP mocks Arebgesola, compares Osun workers to IDPs

Published

The PDP wants the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) to come to the aid of civil servants in Osun State by donating relief materials to them, as the state government has failed to pay them salaries in the last seven months.

The party’s Director of Media and Strategy in the state, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, who made the appeal in a statement in Osogbo, on Thursday, also called on members of the PDP to begin bringing foodstuff to the party’s secretariats in all the local government areas in the state for onward distribution to the workers.

NEMA usually donates such items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Odeyemi who commended the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for rallying support for the workers, said, “The situation in the state requires much more than what religious bodies can cope with. We are calling on the National Emergency Management Authority, Red Cross Society and well- meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the workers in the state.

“The situation of unpaid salaries is so bad that many of those in the employment of government have now resulted to begging to feed their family while many have attempted to hang themselves” he said.

But the state governor, Rauf Aregbesola, says he is not insensitive to the plight of the workers who have not been paid their salaries for months.

In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, on Thursday, Aregbesola denied allegations of financial recklessness being leveled against him.

According to him, “This administration remains very sensitive to the welfare of Osun workers. The financial situation of the state that has made it unable for the state government to pay workers’ salary is disheartening and painful.

“However, no one can establish a single instance of recklessness on the part of this government.”

Normally, id plead with Ogbeni but this even goes beyond him and Id plead with President Buhari and the leadership of the APC as this thing as really gone deep. I cant imagine how Id survive, not getting paid for 1 month, not to talk of 7 months. Now people are dying and stuff. How this is a chance of PDP to mock is politicising this sad issue and that is the least of the things we need now. Did the state not get Federal allocations in 7 months or no state IGR? Please we need answers

How can Aregbesola claim to be sensitive to the welfare of unpaid workers?? Did the state government stop functioning (spending money on itself) in those seven months? Did Ogbeni and his aides stop collecting their salaries and allowances, as a show of solidarity with the hapless workers? What excuse does a man like Aregbesola, who is a front-liner in the change crusade, have to let workers go unpaid for that long? How can a government spend money on other things, and then leave the upkeep of its workers to charity? Na wa o! Dia ris God o
