PDP suspends Senator Kashamu on day of Nat’l Convention

On a day it is to hold a make or break national convention to pick its national executives, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the suspension of senator representing Ogun East, Buruji Kashamu.

The party on its official Twitter handle in the early hours of Saturday said “the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Buruji Kashamu for a period of one month”.

It did not provide reasons for the action, but stated that it would provide details of the action later.

It is going to be a very busy day for the party as all is set for the national convention that many have suggested may very well decide the future of the party once taunted as the largest political party in Africa, as it continues to navigate troubled waters to stay alive and relevant ahead of the 2019 general election.

Kashamu has been having running battle with the national caretaker committee of the party led by Sen Ahmed Makarfi.

His suspension is coming soon after the Federal High Court in Abuja struck out the suit he filed to stop any action against him by the party.

The party had accused the senator representing Ogun East senatorial district of involving himself in anti-party activities and referred his matter to Chief Tom Ikimi-led Disciplinary Committee of the party for appropriate action.
But in efforts to escape being disciplined by the party, Kashamu in his suit argued that his referral by the PDP to the Chief Tom Ikimi-led Disciplinary Committee, among other disciplinary actions already and being planned to be taken against him, violated the orders made by the court on August 10 and September 10, 2017 in a pending suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/732/2017.

Earlier, the Appeal Court sitting in Ado Ekiti had also quashed any hope of a faction of the PDP in Ogun State led by Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe to represent the Southwest zone at the December 9 national convention of the PDP.

The Appellate Court ordered a stay of execution of the ruling of the Federal High Court that declared the faction, also supported by Senator Kashamu, as the authentic zonal leadership of the party.

Following the ruling, a stop was finally put to the issue of which executive faction between the Ogundipe and Dr. Eddy Olafeso, will represent the Southwest zone in today’s national convention of the PDP.
