PDP crisis deepens as 23 state chairmen endorse Sheriff

Despite efforts at reconciling warring factions in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party is still falling deeper into crisis.

The battle between National chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee, has again been further ignited as 23 state chairmen on Thursday pledged their allegiance to Sheriff.

With this, the battle has moved to another level as it was previously believed that most governors under the party’s platform, and by extension, the party hierarchy in such states, were in support of Makarfi.

The 23 chapter chairmen of the party while announcing their support for Sheriff, also stated that they were in agreement with the recommendations made by the Governor Seriake Dickson Peace and Reconciliation Committee for a unified national convention to hold not later than August this year.

The 23 state chairmen made their decision known in a communique they released after their meeting in Abuja on Friday night.

In the communique, copies of which were sent to newsmen on Saturday, the chairmen said the lingering crisis in the party has become very worrisome, adding that it would affect the future of the party if not urgently resolved, more importantly as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the 2019 election timetable.

Yunusa Suleiman, the Federal Capital Territory PDP chairman, while reading the communique said that his colleagues resolved to support Sheriff because of the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which authenticated him as the party’s substantive national chairmen.

According to Suleiman, the support for Sheriff was without prejudice to the ongoing appeal initiated against the chairman by Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee faction of PDP.

He assured that they were going to follow whatever the outcome of the case at the Supreme Court will be.

Sheriff and Makarfi have been engaging in a war of words over who between them wants to destroy the party.

Sheriff holds that Makarfi’s insistence for him to resign is so that he will destroy the party, while Makarfi and his supporters have constantly accused Sheriff of working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destroy PDP.
