The Nigerian Union of Pensioners has urged the federal government to immediately pay its members the 42 months pension arrears.

The body made this appeal on Thursday in Abuja during its national delegates conference.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference and signed by its National President, Dr. Abel Afolayan and the General Secretary, Elder Actor Zal, the NUP also requested for the payment of the balance of 20.4 per cent increase in pension which it said is long overdue.

The body also appealed to the office of the Accountant General, Budget Office of the Federation and Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) to work together towards ensuring that their pensions are paid as at when due.

The union however, commended PTAD for the commencement of the biometric/verification exercise for pensioners, and urged the directorate to sustain and complete the exercise in good time.

The pensioners condemned the recent pronouncement of some governors aimed at reducing the minimum wage, pointing out that it will continue to engage the relevant government authorities on the need to unionise all retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme to join the Nigeria Union of Pensioners.
