Pentagon chief resigns, cites policy difference with Trump for stepping down

Another prominent US political personality in the person of Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has stepped down from President Donald Trump administration, citing policy difference for his decision.

Reports say Mattis who will leave by the end of February after two tumultuous years in the post, told Trump after his decision that “you have the right to have a defence chief whose views are better aligned with yours”.

In his resignation letter, emphasised the importance of standing up for US allies – an implicit criticism of the president’s decision on this issue and others.

“While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies,” Mattis wrote.

Mattis threw in the towel a day after Trump overruled his advice against pulling troops out of Syria and pressed forward on discussions to withdraw forces from Afghanistan.
