PHILIPPINES: 100 feared dead, dozens declared missing as flash floods wreck havoc

A deadly landslide triggered by Tropical Storm Tembin has left no less than a 100 people dead in the Philippines and a dozen other victims declared missing.

The worse hit provinces of Lanao del Norte witnessed the death of at least 48 people after floodwaters from a mountain swept away several houses and villagers following a the raging storm.

The southern island of Mindanao was also not spared as the storm brought with it winds of 80 kilometres per hour and torrential rain on Saturday.

Reacting to the destruction caused by the storm, Mayor Bong Edding of Zamboanga del Norte province’s Sibuco town said search was underway for missing persons.

He added that more than 30 people were swept away by flash floods in the fishing village of Anungan.

“The floodwaters from the mountain came down so fast and swept away people and houses,” said Edding.

“It’s really sad because Christmas is just a few days away, but these things happen beyond our control.”
