PHILIPPINE: ISIS beheads 1 of 4 captives held since December

One of the four Filipino fishermen captured and held captive by ISIL-linked group, Abu Sayaf, since December last year has been beheaded according to the Philippine army.

Providing more insight into the incident, Brigadier-General Cirilito Sobejana, military commander of the southern island of Jolo, said the boat’s captain had been executed in the jungle near the town of Patikul.

Sobejana also informed that the remains of the victim identified as Noel Besconde who was abducted along with three crewmen on board a fishing vessel, had yet to be recovered.

Sobejana said it was possible the abductors beheaded Besconde because he was sick and had become a liability.

“The reason why he was beheaded is that he was delaying their movement,” Sobejana said. “They [Abu Sayyaf fighters] are highly mobile and we are pursuing them.”

Abu Sayyaf is a small group known for beheadings, kidnappings, bombings and extortion in the south of the mainly Catholic country.
