Plan to sack Buhari heightens as PDP, 41 other parties consider consensus candidate

The efforts by Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) to ensure power is wrestled from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 got heightened on Tuesday, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Uche Secondus, and leaders of 41 other political parties, that make up CUPP, met in Abuja to thinker on presenting a consensus presidential candidate for the election.

During the meeting, the leaders were said to have accepted that the presidential candidates of all the political parties that emerged at individual primaries would undergo screening.

At the meeting which held behind closed doors at the Musa Yar’ Adua Conference Centre, the leaders it was learnt, agreed that all the parties would support any candidate picked for the election.

The meeting was chaired by the chairman of the CUPP steering committee, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

In attendance at the meeting included national chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Olu Falae; national chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus; R -APC chairman, Mr Buba Galadima, the Leader of the National Intervention Movement, Alhaji Tafawa Belewa and a former governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke.

All the chairmen of the over 40 political parties involved in the coalition were present at the meeting.

Talking about the meeting CUPP spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, said that the meeting agreed to rescue the country from the “gradual drift to a state of economic hopelessness and reign of impunity from the APC.”

He further to say, “At the meeting, a decision was taken to start the process that will lead to the eventual selection of the consensus candidate for the major opposition parties in Nigeria .

“The CUPP chieftains pledged their readiness and commitment to forge a common front to chase out the incompetent APC administration.”
