Plans to reduce ministries won’t affect workers -Presidency

Reacting to fears that workers may be at the receiving end of plans by the present administration to reduce the number of ministries, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu has reassured that workers will not be affected in any way.
There had been fears in some quarters, that a reduction of the number of ministries will lead to job losses.
Shehu while speaking during an interview yesterday, however said, that there would be no job losses in the process of pruning the ministries, departments and parastatals, adding that the process would be a very “painstaking thing” that would be done very carefully.
He said workers need not fear as the Buhari administration would not create unemployment, assuring that the president remained committed to his promise to create jobs.
He stated that there is no going back on President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan to prune the number of federal ministries

The president had disclosed at the Nigeria House in Cotonou on August 1 while interacting with the Nigerian community in Benin Republic that he planned to slash the number of ministries.
Buhari was at the time on a one-day visit to Cotonou as the special guest of honour at the 55th Independence Day Anniversary of Benin Republic. There had been media reports that the president had accepted the recommendation of his Ahmed Joda-led transition committee to slash the number of ministries from 42 to 19 to save cost and make them more efficient.
Reports also had it that the incumbent administration would merge some ministries to ensure proper coordination of duties and better service delivery.
