‘Play-acting’ ploy of suspected ritual killer to seek psychiatric help doesn’t fool judge

A plea by suspected ritual killer, Ifeanyi Dike to be granted leave to visit a psychiatric hospital for examination and probable treatment has been rejected by a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The application was earlier filed by the suspect’s counsel, Lezina Amegua based on the suspicion that his client might have a mental problem due to the irrational nature of his statements.

However, Justice Adolphos Enebeli, struck out the application by Amegua noting that he would not be swayed by the reason given to grant his client time to visit a psychiatric hospital for examination.

Describing the plea as unmeritorious and wasteful, Justice Enebeli said the suspect was a student of the University of Port Harcourt before he committed the crime and was only play-acting to avoid trial.

After deciding on the application by Amegua, Justice Enebeli adjourned the case till February 8, 9 and 16, 2018 for the beginning of the trial.

Dike was arrested and is currently standing trial for the murder of an eight-year-old girl, Chikamso Nmezuwuba after he removed some vital organs of the girl after she was killed, for money ritual purpose.
