Plenary: Lawan, Akume walk out on Ekweremadu
The sharp division in the Senate reared its head again on Wednesday, as some pro-Lawan Senators, led by Senators Ahmed Lawan and George Akume, walked out of plenary in protest against the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over plenary.
Ekweremadu, who was presiding over plebary for the first time since the inauguration of the 8th Senate, took charge in the absence of Senate President Bukola Saraki, who was at the State House for the inauguration of ministers.
Lawan and Akume, alongside some of their loyalists were angry that Saraki allowed Ekweremadu to preside over plenary.
The duo of Lawan and Akume were the anointed candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for the position of President and Deputy President of the Senate before Saraki emerged.
