Poland crash out of World Cup after 3-0 thrashing by Colombia

Poland fell to a heavy defeat to Colombia in their second Group H encounter at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, a result that forces them out of the competition.

In the game played at the Kazan arena in Russia on Sunday, Poland were thrashed 3-0 by a dominant Colombia side, who remain in contention for a second round slot.

Both teams had lost their opening games, and after Senegal and Japan had played a draw earlier on Sunday, they knew any side that lose would be going home.

Having fallen to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Japan in their first game, Colombia began their lead in the 40th minute as Yerry Mina nodded in James Rodriguez’s cross.

The Colombians dominated the game even after the break and had two more goals to show for it.

Radamel Falcao broke through in the 70th minute and Juan Cuadrado capped off the team’s fine performance with a sweet finish just 5 minutes later to seal the deserved win.

Poland’s Robert Lewandowski struggled with a lack of service throughout the game. The Bayern Munich striker had his long-range effort tipped over by goalkeeper David Ospina in injury time.

As it stands, Senegal and Japan are with 4 points and similar goal difference, seated at the top of the group, followed by Colombia with three points.

The Teranga Lions will battle Colombia in their last group game, while Japan face Poland concurrently.
