Police arrest 97 Biafra agitators in Ebonyi, Cross River

Over 90 members of the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) were on Monday arrested by the Police during rally in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital and in Cross River State.

The group were marching to commemorate Biafra independence, tagged ‘New Biafra’.

In Ebonyi State, the agitators who flooded the streets and roads with Biafran flags were arrested on their way from Ohaukwu, the gateway from Enugu to Abakaliki and also at Onueke, while on their way to join the rally held in the state capital.

The group leader in Ebonyi, John Nwifuru, said they were guarded by a team of policemen to ensure it was not hijacked by hoodlums, adding that those arrested by the police would be released as he had spoken with the police authority on the matter.

“Our rally was very successful and we don’t have any problem despite mobile policemen that disturbed early in the morning when we were converging for the rally

“They arrested about eleven Biafra security boys at Ohaukwu area of Ebonyi State, then about 16 were arrested in Nkwegu community among others,” he said.

In Cross River State, it was reported that the leader of the group, Samuel Okah, and 46 others were arrested and detained at the headquarters of the state Police Command in Calabar.

They were arrested on Monday at Odukpani junction in Odukpani Local Government Area of the state during their march.

This is coming as the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has declared a stay at home in the South East states on May 30, to mark Biafra’s Heroes day.
