Police arrest Imam for holding Jumaat service in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a Muslim cleric, Mohammadu Young Okotie for holding a Jumaat service last Friday.

Okotie was said to have held the service at the Ekakpamre Central Mosque in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state, in violation of the ban on large gatherings ordered by the state government.

The Delta Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya said the Imam was arrested at about 11am on Friday.

According to her, he is being held at the Otu-Jeremi Police Station for possible prosecution according to the laws of the land.

The Imam had lamented the poor treatment of Muslims in the council area, especially during the recent distribution of COVID-19 palliative as responsible for his action, where hundreds of Islamic faithful gathered for the prayers.
