BAYELSA: Police vow to arrest killers of Sergeant

The Nigeria Police has claimed that 323 persons within the country fell into its net for various electoral offences during the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

While disclosing this at a meeting on Monday in Abuja, the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, noted that the Special Election Investigation Team had been ordered to investigate all cases and work with the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure prosecution.

He expressed displeasure over officials who were assaulted, injured or killed when discharging their duties during the polls.

Ripples Nigeria had earlier reported that 128 persons were arrested by the force for various electoral offences which included homicide-related crimes, vote-buying, ballot box snatching, impersonation and damage to property.

While assuring that no weapons would be deployed by officers at polling units during the coming elections, Adamu said officers will be paid their allowances on a regular basis ahead of their deployment for election duty.

The Inspector General of Police noted that performances would be evaluated while plans would be perfected as regards the governorship and national assembly election slated for March 9.

Adamu warned all political actors against violence and urged them to exercise integrity which is in line with the Electoral Act.

“Doing otherwise shall attract the full and appropriate response from the police and other security agencies,” he said.
