In what many residents describe as horrific, the bodies of “probably seven” babies were found inside an apartment in Germany’s Bavaria state, police said Friday.

The gruesome discovery has spurred authorities to hunt for the woman who last lived there, as they worked to identify the remains.

A woman in the town of Wallenfels called authorities Thursday afternoon after finding one body, said Jurgen Stadter, a police spokesman based about 30 miles west in Coburg.

Police went to the apartment and found more corpses, said Stadter, who estimated seven in all.

The bodies are in poor condition, Bavarian police said on their website.

Authorities have not said how old the children appeared to have been, and police said the results of forensic examinations aren’t expected back until next week. No one has been arrested in connection with their deaths.
