IGP issues 2-week ultimatum to PDP, locks up offices

The FCT Police Command has started Investigation into the death of a teenage hawker who died while trying escape arrest by officials of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB.

The FCT police commissioner, Wilson Inalegwum stated this on Sunday.

The hawker died on November 13 after he scaled a bridge around Bolingo Hotel area of the FCT.

According to Inalegwu, some arrests had been made and investigation was ongoing.

“We are investigating that case, we have made arrest and we are trying to narrow it down to whoever is responsible for that.

“We are investigating, that is all that I can say. We are very much aware of that case,” he said.

He however disclosed that the police had counselled that officials of the board be evenhanded while carrying out their duties.

“We have told them to be evenhanded and told the management to deal with any staff that is overexcited,” he said.

Inalegwu also appealed to residents of the FCT to show understanding by obeying the law against hawking in the territory.

“But we also appeal to FCT residents to show understanding by not engaging in street hawking.

“If everybody is allowed to hawk on the street the traffic will not flow and we will begin to have traffic robbers.

“Experience has shown that this hawkers metamorphosis at night to use same locations when you stop at traffic to rob you at night.

He insisted that standards cannot be lowered because Abuja is vonsmopolitan city so as not to encourage criminality.

The management of AEPB has however denied responsibility in the hawker’s death.
