Police takeover Edo Assembly

The police on Thursday took over the Edo State House of Assembly, locking the gate, and barring everyone from going in or out of the premises.

The action of the police is coming barely 24 hours after the impeachment of the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Yekini Idiaye by lawmakers loyal to the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

According to reports, scores of the security officials had stormed the complex on Thursday morning while patrol vehicles were stationed outside, and on adjourning roads to the complex located in Benin, the Edo State capital.

It was also gathered the action of the police may not be unconnected to reports of an impending attack on the complex.

The police team was led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Ayoola Ajala, who were later joined by personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

It would also be recalled that the Speaker of the Assembly, Frank Idiye, had said in a social media broadcast on Wednesday, shortly after Idiaye’s impeachment, that he (Idiaye) was impeached because he was planning to “forcefully and illegally” take over the assembly in concert with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.
