It was yet another bloody day on Wednesday, as armed robbers stormed a bank in Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo State, killing several persons, including a policeman.

According to eye witnesses, a security guard at the bank was killed during the operation said to have lasted for over an hour.

The robbery operation started at about 6.am, moments after the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, left Auchi, a distance of about 30 minutes drive to Igarra.

Eyewitnesses said the robbers killed a guard and started shooting people after ransacking the bank and also attacked policemen at the police station, adding that many of those shot are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the area.

The police in the area were said to have engaged the heavily armed robbers in a shootout in collaboration with local vigilantees, who block all routes leading to the town. This, witnesses said, made the robbers to abandon their operational vehicle.

Another account however said policemen who hid in the bush only came out when an armoured personnel carrier was brought to the robbery scene.
