Pope Francis confirms Onaiyekan’s retirement, ratifies Kaigama’s appointment as Archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese

Pope Francis on Saturday confirmed the retirement of His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, and appointed Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama as the new Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja.

A statement from the church said the date Kaigama’s installation would be communicated in due course.

Cardinal Onaiyekan had also confirmed his retirement, saying it was long over-due.

He said it was time for transition and for a new leader to continue from where he had stopped.
