Pope prays for peace in Nigeria as killings by herdsmen hits Catholic Church

The recent spate of killings by Fulani herdsmen in the country has been decried by Pope Francis during his remarks to the public at the St. Peter’s Square located directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.

Pope Francis who is the 266th and current Pope and sovereign of the Vatican City State especially condemned the killing of two priests and 17 worshipers by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

“The pontiff prayed that Nigeria’s Christian community find harmony and peace,” AP reported.

The comments of Pope Francis is coming days after a large number of Christians in Nigeria obeyed the call by the Christian Association of Nigeria to protest against the killings by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State and other parts of the country.

The CAN President, Rev. Olasupo Ayokunle, in a statement last Wednesday said, “CAN urges Christians in Nigeria to hold peaceful protest on the set aside date, on the premises of their churches, asking the Federal Government and security agencies to stop the unending killings and bloodshed in the country.”
