Presidency backtracks, says Boko Haram only terribly degraded, not totally defeated

The Presidency has reneged on the claim that Boko Haram terrorists in North East Nigeria have been totally defeated, saying that the dreaded sect has only been terribly degraded.

Nigerians were recently meant to believe by the Army and President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government that Boko Haram insurgency group has been totally defeated.

Not long after that declaration was made, a bomb blast by the sect in Borno State, left no less than 26 persons dead and several others wounded.

And last Monday, the group’s attack on Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) Dapchi, Yobe State, left 110 schoolgirls missing till date.

However, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, when confronted with the issue of insurgency in the North East during his appearance on Channels Television’s political programme, Sunday Politics, admitted that the sect has not yet been completely defeated.

Adesina said, “If the operating word is ‘totally’, the answer is no obviously – but has Boko Haram been degraded? I will say yes, terribly so. You can compare then and now, they have been terribly, terribly degraded but is the war over? No, it is not completely over.”

“Compare how Boko Haram was in 2015 when this administration came, they were virtually running riot everywhere – how many time was Kano bombed, how many time was Abuja bombed, how many time was Kogi bombed; Boko Haram was everywhere.”

Buhari’s spokesman who regretted the development in Yobe said, “Truly, it should never have happened. After what the country experienced in the Chibok girls’ saga, this one that just happened in Dapchi should never have happened.”

He meanwhile promised that President Buhari will stop at nothing to ensure the safe return of the students.
