Presidency clarifies issues around tax reform bill amid northern states’ concerns
The presidency has addressed concerns raised by the 19 Northern states’ governors regarding the tax reform bill before the National Assembly.
> Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a press release on Thursday, emphasized that the proposed legislation creates a fairer system benefiting all states.

> Onanuga outlined the bill’s main objectives: “President Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council endorsed policy initiatives streamlining Nigeria’s tax administration processes, enhancing efficiency and eliminating redundancies.”

> He highlighted:

> 1. Simplifying tax obligations nationwide.
> 2. Enhancing efficiency across tax operations.
> 3. Correcting inequity in VAT revenue distribution.

> Onanuga assured, “These reforms emerged after an extensive review of existing tax laws… They’re critical to improving Nigerians’ lives and weren’t proposed to undermine any part of the country.” He emphasized tax rates remain unchanged, focusing on equitable distribution.

> The National Assembly considers four executive bills transforming Nigeria’s tax landscape:

> 1. Nigeria Tax Bill: Eliminates multiple taxation.
> 2. Nigeria Tax Administration Bill (NTAB): Harmonizes tax processes.
> 3. Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill: Renames FIRS.
> 4. Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill: Creates Joint Revenue Board.

> The Northern Governors Forum had opposed the derivation-based VAT model, citing job loss concerns. Onanuga clarified, “While we commend governors and traditional rulers for supporting President Tinubu on security successes, we address misunderstandings around tax reform.”

> President Bola Tinubu assured, “For those concerned about the tax reform, rest assured it’s designed for fairness and growth.” Onanuga reiterated, “The presidency is committed to transparent governance, ensuring Nigeria’s progress.”
