Presidency clarifies where Buhari stands in Ogun guber election

The Presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari will not support Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s anointed governorship candidate, Adekunle Akinlade.

According to the Presidency, Dapo Abiodun, the governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has the support of Buhari.

Governor Amosun, though an APC governor, is supporting Akinlade of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) to be his successor, and he had on Sunday presented him to President Buhari.

The visit had got some confused on who, between Abiodun the APC candidate, and Akinlade, the APM candidate will have Buhari’s support.

To clear the worries, the presidency in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in Abuja said: “Following repeated media enquiries on the matter, the Presidency wishes to state in clear and unmistakable terms that as a party leader and a candidate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming elections, President Muhammadu Buhari will campaign for the party and all its candidates.

“This however does not mean that he, as the nation’s leader, will decline courtesy calls or offers of support from citizens including candidates flying the flags of other parties.

“There is no doubt that the President has no competition here in terms of popularity in the coming elections. But the more support he gets, the wider the margin of victory there will be.

“So please let there be no confusion about this. President Buhari is APC. He will campaign for all APC candidates, but he welcomes support and endorsements.”

Amosun, who is an APC senatorial candidate refused to support the party governorship candidate in Ogun on the reason that Akinlade, his anointed candidate was not announced by the party national leadership as the winner of the state gubernatorial primary.

Akinlade had dumped the APC for APM following the development.

His party, APM had since adopted President Buhari as its presidential candidate for the February 16 poll.
