President of Lebanon calls on Saudi to explain whereabouts of country’s PM

Michel Aoun, the President of Lebanon, has called on the government of Saudi Arabia to explain the whereabouts of Saad Hariri, the country’s ex- Prime Minister who resigned his position only last week.

Aoun said he wondered what was preventing Hariri from leaving Riyadh, where he announced his surprise resignation on a Saudi satellite channel, with reports suggesting that his resignation was not being accepted unless he delivered it on Lebanese soil.

Hours ago, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah movement accused Saudi Arabia of stoking war in Lebanon by forcing the resignation of Hariri and detaining him in Riyadh.

Nasrallah said the move by Saudi had declared war on Lebanon and his Iran-backed group, while also revealing that Saudi was holding Hariri against his will, saying it wished for him to have “all his freedom of movement and be fully able to play the essential role that is his in Lebanon”.

The Hezbollah leader added that Hariri, a long-time Saudi ally insulted his compatriots when he declared his resignation while in Riyadh last Saturday, and must return to Lebanon.
