Barring any last minute change, residents of Arab, a community in Calabar municipality may stage a protest to the zonal office of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) over an alleged arbitrary hike in electricity tariff.

At a meeting held yesterday, leaders of the community expressed their concerns on the continued rise in the monthly tariffs shared out by PHEDC to the people.

One of the leaders, Dr. Ukpong Andinam, in a chat with New Telegraph after the meeting, revealed that the community may allow youths in the area to stage a peaceful protest against the high billing system which he described as “extortion.” He said: “Our youths had actually planned to beat up those PHEDC workers whenever they come around, but we prevailed on them because it will be seen as a crime.
