Police in Cairo are having a hard time controlling angry nationals after protests broke out following a controversial deal which saw Egypt conceding two islands to Saudi Arabia.

Security operatives fired tear gas at a crowd of protesters in the Egyptian capital with calls for the resignation of Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi renting the air.

The Egyptian President has continued to receive heavy knocks back home after a visit to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman where he gave away the Red Sea islands.

The uninhabited islands have been under Egyptian control since 1950.

The protesters in Cairo chanted “Sisi out” and “We own the land”.

Mohamed Hussein, an engineer, told Reuters: “I’m protesting because of the overall situation in the country, not just the islands.”
