Protests erupt in Australia following abuse of teens in prison

Published

on

Major cities in Australia witnessed demonstrations as thousands trooped out to protest against alleged maltreatment of teens (mostly Aborigines) serving time in detention centres.
Demonstrations erupted after Australian television aired graphic visuals showing six Aboriginal boys being stripped naked, tear-gassed, held in solitary confinement and shackled to a chair as a restraint measure.
An expanded enquiry into the shabby treatment of teenage prisoners who were stripped naked and teargassed has been ordered by the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
The viral graphic visuals has now sparked fresh criticism of Australia’s shabby treatment of Aborigines who are reported to have more inmates in Australian prisons.
