Protests erupt in India after Chief Justice cleared of sexual harassment

Dozens of protesters assembled outside India’s Supreme Court on Tuesday, carrying placards amd demanding an impartial investigation a day after a panel of judges dismissed a sexual harassment complaint against chief justice Ranjan Gogoi.

According to Aljazeera, a former court assistant accused chief justice Ranjan Gogoi of having made unwanted sexual advances last year but Gogoi denied the charges.

In her complaint filed to the court last month the 35-year-old court assistant whose identity has been withheld, claimed she was fired from her job and her family had been harassed after she refused Gogoi’s advances.

“Transparent and fair due process is a must,” read one of the placards, while another read, “supreme injustice.”

“The in-house committee found no substance in the allegations contained in the complaint,” the Supreme Court’s secretary general said in a brief statement on Monday, dismissing the woman’s complaint.

It was learnt that security was intensified outside the court on Tuesday with dozens of paramilitary police and trucks carrying water cannon positioned in the area.
