Corruption became the topical issue on Sunday at an event in Ilorin, Kwara State, where speakers strongly condemned it saying it has become a serious threat to Nigeria’s survival.

The Chief Judge of the State, Justice Sulyman Kawu, in his speech proffered what could be described as a holistic solution as he said the police, judiciary and the civil service should be the first line of action in the fight against the social malaise.

He maintained that the three bodies needed to be reformed before the fight against corruption could be efficient and effective.

And another speaker, the President, Third Estate, Ilorin Emirate, Dr. Yusuf Lawal, stated that one of the ways out was also for the elected and appointed government officials to uphold the constitution to which they had sworn to carry out their duties conscientiously.

Kawu and Lawal spoke on the sidelines of the 17th annual lecture of Third Estate in Ilorin.

Kawu suggested that there should be a national re-orientation of the citizens to encourage honesty, discipline and loyalty to national objectives.

The Chief Judge also called for the introduction of credible public complaints system and the establishment of offices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission at ward, local government and state levels.

Besides, he charged lawyers to assist in the administration of justice by not seeking frivolous injunctions and unnecessary adjournments stressing that the price the country was paying for tolerating corruption was enormous.

“The price for accepting corruption as a way of life is what we have been paying in terms of unemployment of our teeming youths, poor roads, ill equipped hospitals, gradual criminalisation of the entire society and many more,” he said.
