Relieve as aviation unions call off strike action against Bi-Courtney

Air travellers from the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2, MMA2, can now travel with convenience as aviation unions have called off their strike action.

The unions under the aegis of Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, the National Union of Air Transport Employees and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers called off their strike action which was against Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited.

The action was called off on Thursday night after the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and security agencies waded into the matter.

The unions embarked on strike after Bi-Courtney sacked 24 workers who expressed their desire to be unionised.

In the truce brokered by NCAA and the security agencies last night, Bi-Courtney was asked to put the affected workers under redundancy while they negotiate their benefits, among other demands.

The Strike action which commenced on Wednesday, grounded the MMA2 terminal being operated by Bi-Courtney, as air travellers were prevented from gaining entry to the terminal.

Airlines, who had to cancel flights as a result of the baricading of the terminal were to move their passengers to the General Aviation Terminal, GAT, on Thursday.

The airlines operating at the terminal bemoaned the crisis, saying they have lost several millions of naira in revenue due to the strike.

Specifically, Dana Air said it has lost over N100 million to the strike, warning that it may be forced to downsize its workforce if the terminal is not reopened.
