Remove multiple charges in aviation sector, Air Peace CEO, Onyema, urges Nigerian govt

The Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has made a passionate plea to the federal government to eliminate the numerous charges imposed on players in the aviation sector.

Speaking on Tuesday to state house correspondents after a meeting with Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Onyema expressed optimism that the present administration will listen to the stakeholders’ demands.

Onyema emphasized, “We want …to make sure all those numerous charges we face are removed.”

According to Onyema, the aviation sector has been a “turbulent arena” since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, he commended Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, for his efforts in repositioning the sector.

“Aviation all over the world has been a turbulent arena after the COVID-19 pandemic because of supply chain issues. This is not peculiar to Nigeria, but the Nigerian government is listening to us and making sure the ease of doing business in the sector is back,” Onyema stated.

Onyema’s meeting with Vice-President Shettima seemed to reinforce his confidence in the government’s willingness to support the aviation sector. “I have just had a session with the Vice-President, and everything he said is that the government is actually promoting the ease of doing business,” Onyema revealed.

The Air Peace CEO’s call to action is not isolated, as the aviation sector’s potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economy is well-documented. The industry is estimated to support $600 million of GDP in Nigeria. However, challenges such as multiple charges and regulatory hurdles have hindered its growth.
