Rep drags AGF, Shittu, NCC to court for reducing MTN fine
A member of the House of Representatives, Raphael Igbokwe, has dragged the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami, the Minister of Communication Technology, Adebayo Shitu, the Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC to court over the reduction of the fine imposed on telecommunication giant, MTN.
Igbokwe, in the suit filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja, is praying the court to declare that the defendants lack the power to reduce the fine under the nation’s laws.
In his affidavit, the lawmaker said he instituted the case against the defendants because he had great interest and was committed to the development of the nation’s jurisprudence.
He also contended that the AGF and Minister of Justice and the Minister of Communications Technology lacked powers to amend, alter, adjust or vary any provisions of a legislation or any other law validly made by the National Assembly, or any rules, regulations and orders validly made by any legislator pursuant to an Act of the National Assembly.
It would be recalled that the NCC had fined MTN N1.04 trillion over its failure to comply with its directives to registered all subscribers on its network. The fine was latter reduced to N330bn.
