Reps demand increased funding for Arabic Language Village in 2025 budget

The House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Federal Government to allocate substantial funds in the 2025 budget for the development of the Nigerian Arabic Language Village’s permanent site in Maiduguri, Borno State.
This followed the adoption of a motion during titled: “Ravaging Flood Disaster in Maiduguri and Other Local Government Areas of Borno State,” sponsored by a lawmaker, Abubakar Fulata, at the plenary in Abuja.
In his presentation, Fulata listed the catastrophic effects of recent flooding in Maiduguri and surrounding areas which led to loss of lives and destroyed property worth billions of naira.
He lamented that the floods severely impacted the Arabic Language Village and destroyed critical infrastructure, including ICT equipment, computers, books, journals, and office furnishings.

“The flood compounded the challenges already faced by the centre due to the Boko Haram insurgency, disrupting its essential immersion and acculturation programmes,” Fulata said.
He warned that the centre’s inability to resume its academic programmes would leave many students stranded, particularly those required to undergo a compulsory one-year programme.
In its resolution, the House directed the Ministries of Budget and National Planning, Finance, Education, and Humanitarian Affairs, along with the Accountant General of the Federation and other relevant agencies, to include significant funding for the development of the village’s permanent site in the 2025 budget.
Additionally, legislators called for the maintenance of the temporary site for continuous operations before the completion of the permanent site.
