It was exchange of blows at the House of Representatives as a serious fight broke out among members over the selection of new principal officers.

At the plenary of the House on Thursday, the tension and divided interest among the legislators led to a brawl between the two factions in the chamber.

At the heart of the fighting is the leadership crisis, which has engulfed the House since the controversial inauguration of the National Assembly on June 9.

The Mace, which is the symbol of authority of the House, disappeared, as the lawmakers continued with their fighting.

It is learnt that the Mace was been ferried to the inner office of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, as confusion prevailed with no one appearing to be in charge of the Green Chamber.

The situation was however calm in the Upper Chamber as Senate President, Bukola Saraki, read the names of the new principal officers. The names were different from those submitted by the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC).

The names read out were the ones that emerged during the mock elections conducted by the zonal caucuses of the party on Wednesday.

Senator Ali Ndume was announced as the Majority Leader while Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah was declared the new Deputy Senate Leader.

Saraki said the position of the Chief Whip has not been decided but confirmed Senator Francis Alimikhena as the new Deputy Chief Whip.

The Senator Ahmed Lawan group, which is backed by the leadership of the party, however rejected the list read out by Saraki.

In the face of such disgraceful display of disorderliness and disunity, we still prefer to pretend that all is well?
