The House of Representatives has moved to ban the sale of alcohol and illicit drugs in motor parks across the country.

This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the member representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency of Oyo State, Abbas Adigun, at Thursday’s plenary in Abuja.

In his presentation, the lawmaker said a report by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) showed that 90 percent of road accidents in the country were caused by the consumption of alcohol and hard drugs by road users.

Adigun said: “The consumption of psychoactive drugs and alcohol increases the risk of motor accidents, leading to loss of driving coordination, poor judgment, poor vision, and consequently loss of life and property.”

In its resolution, the House urged the governments at all levels to immediately ban the sale of alcohol and other illicit substances in and around motor parks in Nigeria.

The House also urged the FRSC to extend its services to the parks and carry out random tests for drivers to ensure that they are not under the influence of alcohol and other dangerous substances.
