Reps order ministries to probe boat mishaps
The House of Representatives on Tuesday ordered the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to conduct a thorough investigation into recent boat mishaps in the country.
The House also ordered the Ministry of Transportation to undertake a similar assignment.
This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance presented by a member of the House, Unyime Idem, at the plenary in Abuja.
In his presentation, the lawmakers drew the attention of his colleagues to last week boat accidents in Kogi and Niger States.

At least 54 persons died in the Kogi boat mishap while 22 others lost their lives in a similar accident in Agaie local government area of Niger State.
The lawmaker expressed concern that the recent surge in boat accidents has raised concerns about the safety of Nigeria’s waterways and the need for urgent intervention.
In its resolution, the House directed the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to enforce safety regulations and ensure compliance with international maritime standards.
