Reps pass for second reading bill mandating specific portfolios for ministerial nominees
The House of Representatives has made significant strides by advancing a bill that mandates the inclusion of specific portfolios in the nomination lists for Ministers and Commissioners submitted by the president and state governors.
The legislation has successfully moved to its second reading, highlighting its potential impact on the governance process.
Leading the discussion, Representative Okechukwu Dibiagwu articulated the necessity of attaching portfolios to ministerial nominations. He argued that this requirement would empower lawmakers in both the national and state assemblies to perform more thorough and targeted scrutiny during the confirmation processes.

“Attaching portfolios to the list of nominations for ministerial positions will enhance thorough scrutiny of nominees by lawmakers at the national and state assemblies,” Dibiagwu stated, underscoring the importance of accountability in the appointment process.
In addition to this bill, the House also considered another important piece of legislation aimed at extending the retirement age for health workers across Nigeria, which has also progressed to its second reading. This bill is expected to have a substantial effect on the healthcare sector by allowing experienced health personnel to remain in service longer, thus addressing workforce shortages and enhancing the quality of healthcare delivery.
