Reps reject CFR honour for Speaker, Abass, demand GCON
In a unified stance, members of the House of Representatives from various political parties on Wednesday argued that Speaker Tajudeen Abbas be awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
The House expressed discontent over President Bola Tinubu’s recent decision to bestow the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Abbas, while granting the GCON to Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and thenSenate President, Godswill Akpabio.
This announcement came during Tinubu’s Independence Day address.
During Wednesday’s plenary session, Deputy Spokesman Philip Agbese raised a motion emphasizing that the treatment of the House of Representatives appears to position it as inferior to the Senate, particularly in light of the GCON awarded to Akpabio.
Agbese highlighted the protocol ranking, noting that the Speaker is 4th in line, while the Chief Justice is 5th, questioning the rationale behind the honors.
Lawmakers reiterated that their calls for recognition were made not on behalf of Abbas personally, but in defense of the Office of the Speaker.
