Reps to donate N704.91m half-year salaries to Tinubu for vulnerable Nigerians

The House of Representatives has announced plans to present a donation of N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024.
The funds, derived from six months’ worth of half-salaries contributed by the lawmakers, are intended to alleviate economic hardship among vulnerable Nigerians following the removal of the petrol subsidy.
The initiative began on July 18, 2024, when the House resolved to cut 50% of their salaries for six months as part of efforts to address the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians. The decision followed a motion presented during plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
While moving the motion, Kalu urged his colleagues to demonstrate solidarity with struggling citizens. “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months,” he said.

“Our salary is N600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 per cent of our salary for a period of six months,” Kalu added, highlighting the symbolic nature of the gesture.
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas addressed the House, reaffirming their commitment to the cause. “If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704,907,578.82,” he said.
Abbas further explained that the donation will be handed over to President Tinubu for targeted use among the most vulnerable citizens. “On December 31, I will lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to the President for the exclusive use of the vulnerable Nigerians who really need it,” he stated.
