We have rescued over 2m people from Boko Haram under Buhari, Buratai boasts

Nigerian Army in victory celebration over Boko Haram

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, Saturday, said the Nigerian Army has rescued over two million people who were held hostage by the violent Islamist sect, Boko Haram, since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in May 2015.

According to the COAS, the feat was achieved through coordinated attacks and operations agaunst the insurgents.

Gen Buratai stated this at a conference organised by the Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Abuja to mark the United Nations World Peace Day.

He was represented by Maj.-Gen. Peter John Bojie, adding that the achievements of the military in the war against Boko Haram was because of the political will, clear directives of President Buhari and supports by all the tiers of government.

He said: “All symbols of government authorities and infrastructure were sacked and destroyed respectively. The situation was so bad that the entity called Nigeria was seriously threatened. Over four million people were displaced and most of them sought sanctuary in Maiduguri up till July 2015.”
