Restructuring inevitable, Nigeria must seize the opportunity now- Nnamani

Former president of the Senate, Senator Ken Nnamani, has thrown his weight behind the calls for restructuring, stating that Nigeria must act fast to fully embrace the principle before it became too late, even as he noted that the merits will soon become clear to current opponents.

Nnamani made this statement on Thursday when he spoke at a national seminar on the theme, “Unity in diversity: Security and national development.”

The event held at the Department of State Services’ (DSS) Institute of Security Studies, Abuja.

He stated that, “Those against restructuring or devolution of power to the state will later see the need for it. If only we can make haste while the sun shines it might help our country. Each state in Nigeria has its own peculiarities. Yes, it might not be on equal proportion as of today.

“For instance, certain crops that grow in the North may have difficulty surviving in the South and the other way round. In my view, the South needs the North just as the North needs the South”.

Nnamani added that,“the concept of any section being a parasite is not correct, because we are naturally endowed as a nation; and if we look properly inwards, we will identify those potential areas which we can turn into high productivity and revenue, we will find out that we are gifted and naturally blessed”.

Speaking on his role in the failed 3rd Term bid of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nnamani maintained that he would never be apologetic for scuttling the bid.

The senator said he would repeat the same thing should he have an opportunity to preside over such a matter again.

He said, “Yes, I presided over the plenary for third term, and all that I needed was to call a spade by its name.

“If I have the opportunity to do it again, I will do the same thing.”

Nnamani, a former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has remained one of the voices in his new All Progressives Congress (APC) party, in support of the restructuring of Nigeria.

APC’s position on the restructuring question has generated much controversy, as prominent leaders of the party have failed to provide a clear and direct position on it, despite the unequivocal support it receives in the party’s manifesto.

The party only recently claimed that Nigerians misunderstood its own definition of restructuring and set up a panel led by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to document and show Nigerians its own version of the concept.
