Rio 2016: AFN offers $50,000 for gold medal

The Athletic Federation of Nigeria offered the sum of $50,000 as price money for any athlete that would win gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.

According to a press statement on Tuesday signed by the AFN’s Head of Communication and Media, Olukayode Thomas, silver and bronze medalists will get $30,000 and $10,000 respectively.

The AFN while making the offer however set a standard for the athletes to meet as they compete at Athletics events across the globe between January 1 and June 30, 2016.

For athletes intending to compete in the men and women 100m must run 10.09secs and 11.10secs respectively.

For the 200m, the men must run 20.20secs and the women 22.50secs, while in the 400m, the entry standard is 45.20secs for men and 50.90secs for women.

For athletes intending to compete in the men 800m, the standard is 1.45.30secs and 2.00.00secs for women.

The men 110 hurdles standard is 13.35secs and women 100m hurdles is 12.85secs as the standard for men and women 400m hurdles are 48.95secs and 54.93secs respectively, while the men’s high jump standard is 2.31m and women 1.98meters.

Thomas also revealed that AFN will pay athletes that meet this standard $2000 while athletes that made the finals in Rio will get $2500.
