The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has approved the appointment of new Police Commissioners for Rivers and Anambra states.

A statement issued on Friday by the Force Spokesman, Frank Mba, said Abang John is now the Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, while DanDaura Mustapha, would head the Rivers State police command.

The Special Assistant to the President on New/Digital Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, also confirmed the redeployment of the senior police officers on his Twitter handle.

Mustapha replaced the former Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Usman Alhassan Belel, who has returned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Force spokesman said the postings take immediate effect.

Mba said: “The Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, has ordered the immediate posting and redeployment of commissioners of police in charge of Anambra and Rivers States commands.

“Consequently, a new Commissioner of Police, CP Abang John, formerly of the Department of Research and Planning, Force Headquarters, Abuja, has been posted to Anambra State Police Command, while the erstwhile Commissioner of Police in charge of Anambra State, CP DanDaura Mustapha has been redeployed to Rivers State as the new police chief.

“The former Commissioner of Police in charge of Rivers State, CP Usman Alhassan Belel completes the triangular movement as he returns to Force Headquarters, Abuja to take over as the new Commissioner of Police in the Department of Research and Planning.

“The postings which are strategically routine in nature are designed to enhance the overall effectiveness and efficiency of policing services in the affected states and departments.

“Meanwhile, the IGP has advised the newly-deployed commissioners of police to bring to bear, their experiences and expertise in dealing with the peculiar challenges in their new places of work.

“The postings are with immediate effect.”

The former Rivers State police commissioner has been in the spotlight in recent times over events in the state.

The state government had early this month ordered the arrest of two pilots and 10 passengers of Caverton Helicopters for allegedly flouting the government’s Executive Order on COVID-19.

Also, on Friday, the government ordered the arrest of 22 staff of ExxonMobil for similar offence.

The two incidents had pitched the state government against the Federal Government, with top federal government officials questioning the rationale behind the Rivers State government’s actions against the two firms since they were carrying out services exempted from the national COVID-19 restrictions policy.
