RIVERS: Court jails 41-yr-old man for defiling 4 daughters

A 41-year-old father identified as Michael Akpan has been jailed on the orders of a Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Port Harcourt for allegedly raping four of his daughters.

The suspect who potentially faces life imprisonment for his action, allegedly defiled four of his daughter said to be aged between two, seven, 11 and 17 years old respectively.

According to court papers, the suspect committed the crime at his apartment located at Borokiri Sand Field area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The charges against the suspect in court read thus; “That you, Michael Akpan, sometime in April 2018, at Borokiri Sand Field, Port Harcourt, within the Port Harcourt Magisterial District, did have unlawful carnal knowledge of (name withheld) without her consent, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. II, Law of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

“That you, Michael Akpan Isaiah, sometime in May, 2018, at Borokiri Sand Field, Port Harcourt, within the Port Harcourt Magisterial District, did have unlawful carnal knowledge of (name withheld) aged seven, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. II, Law of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.”

According to Fortune Ndah, a representative of the Federation of International Women Lawyers in Rivers State, the suspect who has been raping his daughters for the past three years was caught in the act by his son.

Before ordering his detention, the Chief Magistrate, Zinnah Alikor, said the action of the suspect is an abomination and also blamed the mother of the girls for failing to have a close relationship with her children which could have earlier exposed the atrocities of her husband.

The Chief Magistrate directed that the case file be transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice, while adjourning the case indefinitely.
