Several Civil Society Organizations have commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their “professionalism” during the recent polls in the state that saved it “from explosion”.

The groups also raised the alarm over plans by some politicians to scuttle the electoral process in Rivers State as planned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The group advised the electoral body to resist the temptation of compromising its standard.

The group made the allegations in an emailed statement on Saturday.

The statement was signed by the President, Society for the Advancement of Niger Delta Peace, Chima Womadi; Coordinator, Niger Delta political Advocacy Platform, Akpofure Unuame; President, Women and Guilds Peace Professionals Initiative, Esther LongJohn and Chairman, Human Rights and Community Builders Association, Edwin Kamala.

The group said, “We wish to alert the relevant institutions and the general public about the plots by certain politicians in Rivers state using state-owned apparatus to procure both foreign and domestic observer groups to pre-empt the INEC on its planned decision over the Governorship elections in Rivers state.

“This plot as we gather, is aimed at manipulating and arm-twisting the Commission to compromise.”

The group acknowledged the role played by INEC and “particularly the Nigerian security forces for their professionalism during the elections which saved Rivers state from explosion.”
